Payments under the Transport Equivalent Scheme to residents of Greece’s islands began today, Tuesday, 7 April, with the aim of bringing islanders’ travel costs into line with those of mainland residents.

Specifically, €22,647,180.13 is being paid to 261,367 beneficiaries for journeys undertaken between 1 January 2025 and 30 June 2025.

“The Transport Equivalent Scheme directly affects the everyday lives of thousands of island residents. Following the completion of all necessary checks, payments to island residents are now commencing, providing meaningful relief from travel costs. We continue to implement policies that improve the quality of life of our island communities and support island life, which represents a comparative advantage for our country,” said Vassilis Kikilias, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy.

The payment concerns the scheme’s 42nd instalment for passengers and covers ferry and air travel under the Island Cost Compensation Scheme (A.NI.KO.).

The expenditure falls under the 2026 Public Investment Programme and is being implemented through the General Secretariat for the Aegean and Island Policy, strengthening cohesion across the islands and supporting island communities.

Instructions have also been issued to execute the electronic payment orders through the e-PDE Information System, so that the funds can be credited to beneficiaries’ accounts promptly.

Stefanos Gikas, Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, stated:

“At this critical geopolitical juncture, we are proceeding with a significant payment under the passenger Transport Equivalent Scheme, settling outstanding payments for the first half of 2025. Through the reform of the Transport Equivalent Scheme, our objective is to improve its effectiveness and strengthen its economic and social impact on our islands.”
