Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vassilis Kikilias highlighted the significance of shipping being included for the first time in the Greece–United States Strategic Dialogue, in an address to the plenary session of Parliament.

“Greece is the world’s greatest maritime nation. We are proud of our seamanship. Our Greek-owned fleet is the leading force in global shipping, accounting for 20% of global tonnage. The United States, a superpower, recognised our country’s maritime strength and, working with us, included shipping in the Strategic Dialogue between our two countries for the first time. And with a concrete outcome: the signing of an agreement on the recognition of seafarers’ certificates. This is an agreement concerning the STCW Convention, and I am pleased that we signed it,” the Minister stressed.

In closing, Mr Kikilias referred to Greece’s role on the UN Security Council and the priorities the country is bringing to the fore:

“As a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, Greece has highlighted and continues to highlight important priorities, such as maritime security, freedom of navigation, steadfast commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and critical issues concerning shipping and maritime infrastructure.”
